Remedy Cuts Cold's
Duration An
over-the-counter homeopathic cold remedy called Zicam can
reduce the duration of your cold by 78 percent if you take it
at the onset, says a company-funded clinical trial.
Gel
Tech LLC, which created the drug, says most OTC and
prescription cold remedies temporarily suppress symptoms of
the common cold. Zicam, by contrast, reduces the duration and
severity of the common cold, the company
says.
Scientists believe colds are caused when viruses
bind with the receptor sites on cells lining the nasal cavity.
Ionic zinc may fill grooves or canyons on the cold-causing
viruses, inhibiting or blocking the virus' ability to attach
to the receptor sites.
Gel Tech says Zicam applies
ionic zinc, known as Zinullose, directly to the nasal cavity.
This, in turn, reduces the infection cycle, the company says.
